OVERVIEW

University of Miami is a private, non-sectarian university. With over 10,000 undergraduates, over 5,000 postgraduates and more than 13,000 full and part-time faculty and staff, the university is the sixth largest employer in Miami-Dade County. The university provides lots of research opportunities for both undergraduates and postgraduates to help them develop academic capabilities. The acceptance rate of this university is 39.2%.

University of Miami was first established in 1925 with the intention of offering “unique opportunities to develop inter-American studies, to further creative work in the arts and letters, and to conduct teaching and research programs in tropical studies.” Located in South Florida and surrounded by popular spots like South Beach, the Florida Keys, and Everglades National Park, the university offers good opportunities for students to take outdoor activities.

University of Miami offers degrees in bachelor’s, master’s, and doctorate’s programs as well as combined-degree programs, like Bachelor of Architecture,MBA, Dual Degree Program in Engineering and so forth. The average freshman retention rate is 90%, and averagely as many as 68% of the students in this university finished their four years’ study and managed to graduate with a degree.

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

Applicants for the university are required to provide either their SAT or ACT scores before January 1 and admission interview is neither recommended nor required. The early decision will be due on November 1 and application must be submitted before January 1. The application fee is USD 70. Working and volunteering experiences usually give applicants extra advantages.

COSTS AND FINANCIAL AID

The tuition and fees for year 2011-2012 are USD 39,654. The room and board fee is USD 11,528. Students averagely spend USD 1,040 on books and supplies.

University of Miami offers scholarships (including both need-based ones and non-need-based ones), financial aids and part-time job opportunities for students to help them deal with their tuition and expenses. There are six types of need-based scholarships/grants, with USD 24,521 awarded for freshman and USD 22,392 non-need-based scholarships/grants offered. University of Miami provides various types of loans for students. About 52% of the students get financial aid and 39% of them have their needs fully met.
