Pomona College

OVERVIEW

Pomona College is a private liberal arts college in US. As an undergraduate institution, it has an enrollment of 15,86 students currently. As a non-sectarian, coeducational school, Pomona College is a founding member of the Claremont Colleges, which has been providing its students with resources of a larger university and maintaining the closeness as a smaller community body at the same time.

Founded in 1887 by a group of Congregationalists in Pomona, California, it was moved to Claremont in 1889. The campus construction was started from an incomplete hotel, and covers about 140 acres now, with 59 buildings included. Now, the campus of Pomona College is divided by Sixth Street into North Campus and South Campus, with a number of earlier buildings remained.

Pomona College offers degrees in bachelor’s program, and has about 1,586 undergraduate students at present. As a member of the Claremont Colleges, or “5-Cs”, namely Pomona College, Claremont McKenna College, Scripps College, Harvey Mudd College and Pitzer College, Pomona allows students to attend classes at the other four colleges, and to major at the other four colleges if the major is nor available at Pomona.

ACCREDITATION

Pomona College has accredited by the Western Association of Schoold and Colleges (WASC) since 2002, and the recent accreditation wad completed in 2011.

Pomona College offers four programs:

Currently, Pomona is ranked No. 4 by U.S. News & World Report among liberal arts colleges, and ranks 9th in the most selective private universities in the States.

All the undergraduates are required to take some core coursework before graduation, including arts, mathematics, English, philosophy, computer literacy, sciences, history, social sciences, etc.

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

SAT or ACT score is required for application, and the application deadline is Jan 2. The application fee if USD 65, with an acceptance rate of 14.7 percent. Transfer students are also accepted, with requirement on minimum credits of 24, and a minimum college GPA of 3.0.

COSTS AND FINANCIAL AID

The tuitions and fees for year 2011-2012 is USD 39,883. On average, room and board may cost USD 13,227 or more.

100 percent of the need-based financial aid applications are met at Pomona College, with 53.6 percent of the full-time students receiving need-based financial aid. The average need-based scholarship provided is USD 35,883.
